As a specialised bureau within CCS, the Counterfeiting Intelligence Bureau (CIB) formed in 1985, protects industry from the damage done by international counterfeiting by gathering intelligence, carrying out covert investigations and providing expert advice and training.

The massive growth of the internet opened up a new marketing and distribution channel for counterfeit goods, primarily produced in developing nations such as China and India. Responding to this threat CIB set up an internet investigations team.

Counterfeiting is one of the fastest growing economic crimes worldwide. It threatens the economies of developed and developing countries alike, damages new investment, and increasingly endangers public health and safety.

Technological advances mean counterfeiters have become more sophisticated. Today, a huge range of items are counterfeited, from clothing and pharmaceuticals to car parts and agrochemicals.

The Counterfeiting Intelligence Bureau (CIB) was formed in 1985 as a specialised bureau within ICC Commercial Crime Services.

CIB is a not for profit membership organisation. Our worldwide members include:

  • Large multinational companies
  • Trade associations
  • Law firms
  • Technology producers
  • Investigative firms

CIB is non-political and provides practical prevention and enforcement support for businesses, police and customs authorities. This is a valuable tool in the fight against the production and distribution of counterfeit goods.
